Work begins April 26 on I-57 in Kankakee County

OTTAWA - The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that work will begin on Monday, April 26, to prepare for the resurfacing of nearly 9 miles of Interstate 57 from the Chebanse interchange (exit 302) to the Kankakee River bridge in Kankakee. The work will require daily and nightly lane closures.

Kankakee Valley Construction Company Inc. of Kankakee and Gallagher Asphalt Co. of Thornton are the joint venture contractors of this$20,058,764 project, which begins with shoulder improvement work for both directions of I-57. Work on the northbound lanes will begin at 4 a.m. April 26and will later shift to the southbound lanes. When the shoulder improvement work is completed, traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction throughout the duration of the project.

Staged construction will begin to replace the northbound bridge deck over Minnie Creek and perform minor structure repairs on the southbound bridge over Minnie Creek. Work will include pipe culvert removals and replacement, guardrail replacement, and smart traffic control installation. Resurfacing of I-57 is scheduled to begin in August and is expected to wrap up by the end of October.

Additional work in this project includes the deck replacement of the Otto Road bridge and minor structure repairs of the River Road bridge-both of which go over I-57.

Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. To avoid the work area, when feasible, use of alternate routes should be considered. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.

Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve more than 3,300 miles of highway and 8.4 million square feet of bridge deck as part of Rebuild Illinois, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation. Year One included approximately $2.7 billion of improvements statewide on 1,706 miles of highway, 128 bridges and 228 additional safety improvements.
