Bridge closure begins May 3 on Otto Road over 1-57 in Kankakee County

OTTAWA-The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that the Otto Road (5000S) bridge over Interstate 57 in Kankakee County will be closed on Monday, May 3, for a bridge deck replacement. The work is scheduled to be completed and the roadway back open by Nov. 15.

Kankakee Valley Construction Company Inc. of Kankakee and Gallagher Asphalt Co. of Thornton are the joint venture contractors of this $20,058,764 project, which includes the bridge deck replacement, improvements on I-57 from the Kankakee River to the Iroquois County line, and work on the River Road bridge over 1-57 in Kankakee. Shoulder improvement for both directions of I-57 began April 26. Work on the northbound lanes will continue and the southbound shoulder work will start Monday, May 3.

When the shoulder improvement is completed, traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction throughout the duration of the project. Staged construction will then begin to replace the northbound bridge deck over Minnie Creek and perform minor structure repairs on the southbound bridge. Work will include pipe culvert removal and replacement, guardrail replacement, and smart traffic control installation. Resurfacing of 1-57 is scheduled to begin in August and is expected to wrap up by the end of October.

Also, work on the River Road bridge over 1-57 in Kankakee also begins on Monday, May 3, with shoulder widening. Traffic signals and harrier wall installation on River Road arc planned for Tuesday, May 4, to maintain one lane of traffic on the bridge to allow the installation of a latex overlay on the bridge deck. The work is expected to wrap up in late summer.

Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. To avoid the work area, when feasible, use of alternate routes should he considered. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.

Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve more titan 3,300 miles of highway and 8.4 million square feet of bridge deck as part of Rebuild Illinois, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation. Year One included approximately $2.7 billion of improvements statewide on 1,706 miles of highway, 128 bridges and 228 additional safety improvements.
